Video: Removal of Mangrove Forests Causing Mumbai to Sink

Mumbai, India is sinking. This is not a natural course of events: the 2005 flood that killed so many people was a direct result of the removal of the
mangroves that once protected the city from yearly floods.
But the the coastal shrubs that trap silt and sand are gone now. Now the area is landfill,
which is being covered by concrete as the city expands at an
exponential pace.


The mangroves are also important for the ecology of the area. With the destruction of the mangrove forests, the fish are leaving, as are the birds. The land is sinking and the entire area is in a flood plain. Only now, there are no forests to keep the floods at bay. It's pretty much a disaster in the making. CNN's Mallika Kapur reports:
