Video: Saudi Arabian Single Mom Thrown in Jail, Threatened for Daring to Drive a Car

A Saudi woman who challenged local rules barring women from driving has been arrested for her protest. Manal Al Sharif is a single mother
and an IT specialist. She talked to CNN
just before she was arrested.



Manal quoted an old Arabic saying that "the rain starts with a drop." She hopes that her protest will help start a wave of protests which will eventually lead to the lifting of the ban against women driving in Saudi Arabia. Her attorney is not allowed to see her and the government is threatening to take away her five year old little boy. She has also been threatened with the loss of her job. She is very brave. Various top clerics are condemning women drivers as "opening the wide door of evil." On cleric said that "God willing, these women will die." The suppression of women's rights in in Saudi Arabia is shocking and horrifyingly unjust. Amnesty International is pushing for Manal's release. Take a look:
