Her speech continued the theme of reconciliation between Britain and Ireland. The Queen's own cousin, Lord Mountbatten, was murdered by the IRA and she mentioned the death obliquely when she mentioned being personally touched by the violence.
In a moving statement she talked of the "heartache, turbulence and loss" of the past century, and noted that "We can all see things which we would wish had been done differently or not at all." It was not a formal apology by Great Britain, but the comments were very well-received by the Irish public, as was her heartfelt gestures of laying wreaths on memorials of the Irish who died fighting for independence against the rule of Great Britain.
