Number of American Households Owning a TV Set Falls for First Time in 20 Years

The New York Times reports that the Nielsen Company has released data indicating the number of American households owning a TV set has fallen for the first time in 20 years. According to Nielsen, 96.7% of American households own TV sets, which is a drop from 98.9%.

The New York Times gives two reasons for the drop in TV ownership. Increasing poverty is one reason - the costly switch from analog to digital may have exacerbated this problem. Another reason is that more people are using computers, such as laptops, to watch videos, movies and TV shows.
