Chef Geoffrey Zakarian Files Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

The New York Times reports that Chef Geoffrey Zakarian has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is the liquidation option under the bankruptcy code. Zakarian's publicist issued a statement saying: "Geoffrey Zakarian filed for bankruptcy due to the enormous costs of defending a class action lawsuit by former employees of a restaurant in which Mr. Zakarian is no longer involved. Mr. Zakarian denied the allegations in the lawsuit but it would cost him several hundred thousand dollars to defend the action." The publicist also said that the chef is sequestered in Los Angeles taping The Next Iron Chef.

The kitchen staff of Country in the Carlton Hotel and Zakarian's former business partner are suing him for $1.25 million in a class action lawsuit. The suit alleges Zakarian failed to pay proper overtime, falsified payroll records and wrongly charged kitchen staff for meals.

Zakarian operates a number of restaurants. His next project is opening the Tudor House restaurant in the Chatwal group's Dream South Beach Hotel in Miami Beach.
